The Panty Barn?

When I was a kid, if people acted with poor manners then you’d often hear them reprimanded with a ‘What, were you raised in a barn or something?’

Now, I have known a fair number of barns in my day. I grew up in an agricultural area. Barns were everywhere so I knew them well and I certainly wouldn’t have wanted people to think I was RAISED in one.

Oh, how things have changed. Last month I moved into my new home in Santa Barbara, which just happens to be, you guessed it, a barn. I was looking for somewhere to keep my stuff while I travel and somewhere to rest my head when I’m back but I never expected to find this absolute little gem.

It was built in 1898 and so it’s definitely rustic but it’s been renovated into a cozy little artists’ studio that I fell in love with the first time I laid eyes on it. The landlord is a creative artist type who lives much of the year in SE Asia (lucky man). Two very good friends of mine live in the main house up front and when they heard the landlord talking about perhaps finding someone to rent it out, they jumped on it for me. So not only do I get to live in a kick ass barn, I basically live in my friend’s backyard too.

But the best part of the whole thing is its name. It was used as a washing shop for women’s undergarments in the early 1900s – I supposed all of those heavy petticoats and whatnot needed some heavy-duty care! So the place is called “The Panty Barn”. Yup, that’s right. I live in the Panty Barn. This amuses me greatly.
