John Hewitt Eliminated from WSOP, November Nine Set

It took a long, long time to burst, but the November Nine bubble finally did just that when John Hewitt was eliminated in 10th place today.

Hewitt clearly wanted in on the WSOP Final Table as he played tighter than a tourniquet after making it to the table of the last 10 remaining players. Hewitt entered 10-handed table with 22,3000,000 in chips and then didn’t play a single hand for two hours, during which his stack took a hit of 4.5 million from blinds and antes.

After the first break he finally got his feet wet and played a hand and it was no small hand as he called Matt Giannetti’s preflop all-in shove. Giannetti showed pocket jacks giving him the edge over Hewitt’s A-10 off-suit. With no help from the board, Hewitt began his descent by doubling up Giannetti.

On the verge of becoming the November Nine Bubble Boy, Giannetti found himself short-stacked again and all-in with pocket Jacks again. This time he was called by Ben Lamb with K-9 off-suit. The Jacks held again and Giannetti bought himself some breathing room again.

Not long after that Badhi Bounahra shoved and Hewitt made the call. Bounahra had Hewitt dominated with his pocket kings over K-9 off-suit. With no help from the deck Hewitt found himself short-stacked with just over four million in chips which, at this point, wasn’t even enough to cover nine big blinds.

With pressure mounting Hewitt was quick to push with pocket threes soon after he lost the pot to Bounahra. This time it was Eoghan O’Dea who made the call showing K-J off-suit. The flop probably made Hewitt pretty nervous with Q-10-7 giving O’Dea an open-ended straight draw. Hewitt’s worst feat came true when he found himself drawing dead after the turn brought an ace giving O’Dea the nut straight.

The November Nine surviving players and their respective chip counts and seats are as follows:

  • Seat 1: Matt Giannetti (24,750,000)
  • Seat 2: Badih Bounahra (19,700,000)
  • Seat 3: Eoghan ODea (33,925,000)
  • Seat 4: Phil Collins (23,875,000)
  • Seat 5: Anton Makiievskyi (13,825,000)
  • Seat 6: Samuel Holden (12,375,000)
  • Seat 7: Pius Heinz (16,425,000)
  • Seat 8: Ben Lamb (20,875,000)
  • Seat 9: Martin Staszko (40,175,000)

The button will start with chip leader Martin Staszko of the Czech Republic when play resumes in four months from now. There will also be a lot of eyes on Ben Lamb. Lamb is on an absolute tear as he just won his first WSOP bracelet this year by beating Phil Hellmuth heads-up to take down the $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship. He also currently leads the Player of the Year Race by long run.
