New Mets Owner, David Einhorn, Has Poker Skills

As you may have recently read, 43-year-old hedge fund wunderkind, David Einhorn, recently became a minority owner of the New York Mets. What you might not have heard is that his love of sports goes beyond baseball and includes one of our favorite games poker. Of particular interest is that he seems to be pretty good at it too. You might even remember seeing him on ESPN’s WSOP coverage back in 2006 when he was eliminated from the Main Event in 18th place right between poker pros, Jeff Lisandro and Prahlad Friedman, and cashing for an impressive $660,000.

Einhorn’s 2006 Main Event run was cut short by none other than the eventual winner, Jamie Gold. His final hand saw him all-in on a Q-high flop while he held top pair with K-Q. Unfortunately for him Gold held a Q-6 which was good for two pair. Gold’s hand held through the turn and river and Einhorn was sent packing.

Like many poker players, Einhorn proved to be a stand-up guy, (dont listen to Joan Rivers), as he turned around and donated his $660,000 WSOP winnings to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, a non-profit on whose board he sits on along with the board of the Robin Hood Foundation.

To prove that his 2006 WSOP cash wasn’t just one lucky run, Einhorn went ahead and garnered another impressive cash with a 1st place finish in the 2008 $3,000 NL Holdem event where he beat out 104 other players to take home the $89,547 top place prize.

These numbers are all just so many small potatoes to Einhorn though. He makes his bread and butter as the President of the hedge fund, Greenlight Capital. His recent purchase of a minority stake in the Mets for $200 million just adds to the man’s already impressive portfolio.
