Which is the best poker game to make money at?

I am often asked which is the best poker game to make money at. This is not an easy question to answer because it rather depends on many factors and too many for this article to address. If you have problems with your discipline then playing no-limit Texas Hold’em may prove to be somewhat of a problem. I have known many players in my time who really struggled with the fact that you could lose 100bb or more on a single hand of play. A better way to address this would be to look at which game currently has the highest number of weak players as a ratio of the total number of players in the game.

Firstly I do not think that this game is either limit hold’em or SNG’s. Limit

TCOOP: Not everyone loves turbos (but you probably should)

Not everyone loves turbos, and I’ve heard some of my peers bemoan the lack of deepstacked, early level play with 100+ BBs. But from my perspective, deepstacked play is simply not the most important skill for a tournament player, and regardless of the speed of the structure, your success in a tournament will most often be decided by decisions that you face holding 10-40BB stacks.

To me, a turbo tournament tests the relevant skills of a tournament player in the most efficient, and fun, manner possible. You are forced to take thin gambles more quickly, and being able to properly take those gambles is the essence of tournament poker, whether it’s the $1 rebuy or the WSOP main event.

Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year

Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year to all readers of pokerbankrollblog.com. Its been a so so year for this blog, as I havent gotten around to writing as many poker articles as I would have liked. Perhaps its because Ive reached the limit of what Im able to write about. Perhaps its because Ive been busy with a bunch of other projects. Who knows?

One things for sure: next year Ill reach my milestone of 500 articles and then new milestones have to settled upon. Perhaps one of them will be to sell this blog to someone who can take it to the next level.

By the way, in 2012 spammers will still not be allowed to post comments on my blog.

The History of Card Counting in Blackjack

The skill of card counting in Blackjack is one that is often credited to the legendary Blackjack player Ed Thorp, but the skill actually goes back to the middle of the twentieth century, when the popular book Playing Blackjack to Win was published in 1957.

Before that date, there was no real strategy in Blackjack indeed, it was more of a game based around guesses and hunches rather than anything more solid.

The book though, written by the four legendary Blackjack players Roger Baldwin, Herbert Maisel, James McDermott and Wilbert Cantey (or The Four Horsemen as they were more commonly known), changed everything.

It contained the worlds first mathematical blackjack strategy and also spoke about a rudimentary system for counting cards that required the use of adding machines to help players become more successful.

This theory certainly made an impact on Thorpe who took the Horsemens thoughts and developed them into a system that no longer required counting machines.

Instead, Thorpes system simply recommended 16 different strategies based on the cards which were showing on the table at any one time.
