Consider Bet Sizing During Poker Games, Busquet Advises
Poker players should lend consideration to the size of the bets they place, according to Olivier Busquet.
Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Busquet – who won the Borgata World Poker Tour (WPT) Open in 2009 – reveals that while playing in last year’s WPT Championship in Las Vegas he was raising on almost every hand when up against Phil Hellmuth.
He goes on to claim that he bases his betting strategy on a keenness to avoid other poker players from seeing his hand.
“Don’t just make the bet that reflects the strength of your hand, but make a bet that makes your opponent think that the actual hand that you have is not in your range,” he states.
Meanwhile, poker professional Victoria Coren noted in a recent article for the Guardian that she found newcomers to the sport are not aggressive enough.
Participating in a women-only tournament, she claims the majority of her opponents “either limped in, called raises or folded”, meaning taking control of the game proved to be relatively easy.
Ms Coren adds that her challengers tended to place bets and raises that were too small.
