Online poker players fight for $8.77m WSOP pot
Despite the tough economic climate, online poker players are among those competing for a World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event pot that could reach $8.77 million (CAN$8.49 million).Considering the ongoing problems with the US government-led shutdown of online poker sites, some expected the WSOP prizes to take a hit this year, but there is still plenty to play for.The WSOPs prize money has undoubtedly been helped by a record number of entrants for this years competition, with 75,672 people taking to the card tables to test their skills. However, Ty Stewart, executive director of the WSOP, told USA Today that the organisers always believed it would be a strong year due to growing interest in poker. He explained: “Weve met our own expectations and crushed everybody elses.”Were very proud because people have been labelling poker or the World Series of Poker as a fad … for the better part of a decade now. And we continue year after year to set records and see the event get bigger and bigger.”One of those competing at the WSOP after honing his skills through online poker is Seinfeld star Jason Alexander.
