Will Westy go one better at Augusta & break his major duck?
The 75th Masters Tournament starts at Augusta on Thursday and after a 2nd place finish last year, Englishman Lee Westwood is an industry best price 16/1 with 888sport to win his first Major on Sunday.
Westwood would be the first Englishman to win at Augusta since Sir Nick Faldo in 1996 and 888sport offers 7/2 that an Englishman will be handed the Green Jacket by Phil Mickelsone Sunday. Faldo won his first Masters in 1989 via a playoff and 33/1 is offered that Westwood does so this year in the same tense way.
Europe currently boasts six of the world’s top 10 ranked golfers and 888sport offers 7/2 that a golfer from Europe wins at Augusta bing the first champion from this continent since Jose Maria Olazabal in 1999.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson is the 11/2 favourite to win the Green Jacket and after his 63 during the third round of last week’s Houston Open, a special 33/1 price is offered by 888sport that the Masters course record of 63 is bettered thisweek.
A vital moment during Mickelson’s win last year was his miraculous approach to the Par 5 13th from the trees in the final round that led to an unexpected birdie. The Par 5’s on the course offer plenty of reward for the brave golfers and 888sport offers 50/1 that Mickelson is able to record an eagle in each of his four rounds this year. Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer are all at 66/1 to have an eagle in each of their four rounds.
Woods will be hoping that Augusta is the place where he can end hiswinless streak and add a fifth Green Jacket to his wardrobe. Woods is 10/1 with 888sport to win on Sunday and 25/1 to be leader or joint leader after every round and to win. Last year’s first round was the first time Tiger had shot in the 60’s for his first 18 holes at the Masters and 2/1 is offered that he can repeat that feat this year.
Scot Martin Laird won his second PGA Tour title two weeks ago at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and is 5/1 to be the top debutant player at this year’s Masters (along with US Ryder Cup player Rickie Fowler at 5/1), 20/1 to end as the highest placed European and 50/1 to win the tournament.
First played in 1960, the Masters Par 3 Contest has be both a tradition and a curse for Augusta hopefuls. No winner of the Par 3 contest has ever gone on to win the Masters in the same year and 888sport is offering a special 33/1 price that the jinx is broken in 2011.
